What is Reiki?

As a Reiki Practitioner I can not diagnose or treat illnesses. I give animals the space to allow their body to heal. Reiki is not a replacement to veterinary care.

Reiki sessions may be helpful for pets...

  • during recovery from surgery to help them relax

  • during recovery from an illness such as pancreatitis or rhinitis

  • to ease anxiety over time

  • during end-of-life care

Reiki is a Japanese system of energy healing founded in 1922. "Rei" means Spirit and "Ki" means Energy. I am a Animal Reiki Practitioner, certified by the Animal Reiki Alliance. https://animalreikialliance.wildapricot.org/aboutreiki

As a Reiki Practitioner, I use techniques that can involve hand-motions/positions, meditation, focused intention, and observation. These techniques allow me to be a vessel for Universal Life Force Energy or Spirit Energy, to go where it is guided to help in the bodies own healing process.

The National Center for Complimentary and Integrative Medicine (NCCIH) classifies Reiki as a gentle alternative medicine practice which uses energy fields or bio fields to affect health. All beings have an energy field and Reiki helps to balance it.

When your pet's energy field is allowed to balance, then they can better give themselves what they need to heal. After a session, a pet may rest, drink more water for the next day or so, stay closer to their owner, or you may notice nothing at all.

What happens during a Reiki session?

  1. Prior to the session you will complete a form that tells me about your pet and what you would like to work on.

  2. The session should ideally take place in an area with no disturbances. An anxious, fearful pet may need to be on a long leash if possible. A cat session would ideally be done in a quiet room.

  3. I will choose a spot on the floor or in a chair in the room and observe your pet's body language and demeanor to determine if it is ok to continue.

  4. I will perform a clearing exercise and will briefly sit in a meditative state; bringing awareness to the discussed intention for the session and reciting the reiki precepts, quietly to myself. I will also ask you to set a positive intention for the session.

  5. I will open my hands in a direction in the room, in an area that your pet can freely walk in and out of during the session.  This will be a designated place for energy.

  6. Depending on the comfort or anxiety level of your pet, I will either have my eyes opened or closed, not giving your pet direct eye contact. I will occasionally make note of their body language, behaviors, and breathing pattern. I will never at any point place my hands on your pet. You will also be present for the session, unless otherwise discussed.

  7. The session is over when your pet "says so". They may walk away and not come back to the room or space.... Some pets will not end the session because they are so relaxed and it will end at the time allotted.

  8. I will take note of how the session went, voice any observations, and follow up in a few days to ask how your pet is doing and to discuss if future sessions are of interest.

  9. **As a new practitioner, I do not have a lot of experience. As advised during training, I will not charge for sessions until I have more experience.**

  10. **If other services that Marley's Angels offers are requested, they will be performed on a separate day from the Reiki session.**
